Picasso, Lorca and Dalí: Revealing the Queer Themes in Their Work

This talk examines Picasso’s ties with Paris’ queer community and the intimate relationship between García Lorca and Dalí, exploring their impact on art and queer expression.

Ignacio Darnaude offers an in-depth exploration of Picasso’s close ties with Paris’ queer community and how this connection influenced his artistic evolution, leading to groundbreaking works that challenge conventional gender norms. It will also examine the intimate relationship between García Lorca and Dalí, highlighting Lorca’s vivid depictions of queer desire in his writings and drawings, alongside Dalí’s surrealist masterpieces that subtly reflect his own exploration of sexual identity.

Art scholar, lecturer, writer, and film producer Ignacio Darnaude is known for his expertise in revealing how queer artists expressed their forbidden desires during repressive periods. His acclaimed lecture series, Hiding in Plain Sight – Breaking the Queer Code in Art, was recently awarded the prestigious Arts Grant from the City of West Hollywood.

This talk is part of the Pride Month and Summer Celebration happening on Thursday, June 6 at Instituto Cervantes New York. The cultural program will also feature Alberto Ferreras’ latest Off Off Broadway immersive show, Miracle.
